Old horse

Two Poems by J. R. Solonche

Old

There should be a horse

here, in this meadow,

an old horse, a bit too tired

to run but who can still trot

over to the fence when he

sees you standing there,

sugar cubes in your hand.

There should be a horse,

an old horse, here in this

empty old meadow. For

the sake of us old.

On the Road

On the road ahead of us,

a farmer sits on his tractor,

slower than the horse-drawn

wagon of his grandfather,

the enormous rubber wheels

the height of his tallest son,

turning slowly, too slowly

for the motorists behind us,

impatient as always to arrive at

their home lives, real or imagined,

which the farmer has no need to,

which the grandfather could not

even if he wanted to.
